A film can bring us closer to a life we have never encountered. A piece of music can connect people who speak different languages through a shared emotion. A theatre performance can give visibility to a voice that goes unheard in everyday life. Art’s contribution to humanity begins in these encounters: listening to one another, developing understanding and exploring how to live together.
At IBL, we see the arts as an important part of social responsibility. We believe support for creative expression can give young people space to find their voices, help cultures understand one another and strengthen relationships within society.
Support in Brussels and Paris since 2004
Since 2004, IBL has supported arts and cinema-based social responsibility initiatives in Brussels and Paris. Our support has included work aimed at helping young people stay away from harmful habits, alongside productions titled “Yabancı Sorunları” and “Avrupalı Türkler”.
Our approach begins with respect for people’s ability to tell their own stories. For young people growing up between cultures in particular, art can provide a valuable way to reflect on belonging, identity and the future, share their experiences and encounter those of others.
Creating space for young people to contribute
On a film set, everyone’s contribution depends on the work of others. From the screenplay and cinematography to acting, sound and editing, each stage calls for attention, responsibility, patience and cooperation. The process of creating together matters alongside the finished work.
Participation in a creative environment can help young people devote time to a meaningful activity and see their effort take shape in a tangible result. The arts offer a setting in which positive interests and healthy social connections can develop. This is why we value their role in initiatives that aim to help young people avoid harmful habits.
For us, support means more than enabling attendance at an event. It also means valuing an environment in which young people feel that their ideas are heard, their work matters and they have something to contribute to society.
Stories of migration, belonging and shared lives
The experience of migration often involves a relationship with more than one language, culture and way of life. Stories about that experience can make visible the human details that are easily overlooked in everyday debate. Cinema’s strength lies in allowing us to consider an issue through the lives of the people who experience it.
We see our support for “Yabancı Sorunları” and “Avrupalı Türkler” within this broader commitment to understanding and intercultural dialogue. We believe the space art creates for sharing different experiences has value in questioning prejudice and strengthening mutual respect.
Our support for S-PRODUCTION
IBL also supports S-PRODUCTION, a Belgium-based arts association that receives European Union support. We regard the development of artistic production and cultural exchange as an important element of our approach to social responsibility.
Our support is guided by the belief that creative work can bring people together around a shared purpose. The relationships formed, knowledge exchanged and responsibilities shared while making a work of art extend its social value beyond the stage or screen.
Every art form contributes to our shared life
Cinema and theatre create space for us to understand different lives. Music allows us to share feelings that words cannot always express. Literature invites reflection on the details of human experience. Painting, photography and sculpture can change the way we see; dance explores the expressive power of the body and movement. Each art form offers a different way of relating to the world.
Supporting this diversity means widening the ways in which people can express themselves. At IBL, we value a richer cultural life, opportunities for young people’s creativity and recognition of the work that artistic expression requires.
Value that reaches into the future
The contribution made by supporting the arts can extend beyond a screening or an event. It may be reflected in a young person sharing an idea for the first time, an audience member beginning to understand another life or a group of people choosing to continue creating together.
At IBL, we believe in the unifying power of art. We see our support for young people, cultural dialogue and creative work centred on human experience as part of our responsibility to society. Our shared future becomes stronger when we can understand one another and create together.
