Learning and Working Together: Equal Opportunities for People with Down Syndrome

Quality education, meaningful employment and a voice in one’s own life: IBL’s approach to an inclusive future.

A person’s future is shaped by opportunities to learn, relationships, contributions and decisions about their own life. People with Down syndrome are equal members of society. Education, friendship, work and community participation should be supported with respect for each person’s interests and needs.

At IBL Finance, social responsibility means recognising potential and helping remove barriers. We value better educational and life opportunities for people with Down syndrome, and advocate an approach centred on their voices, preferences and participation.

Understanding the global picture

The United Nations estimates Down syndrome occurs in approximately one in every 1,000–1,100 live births worldwide. This describes birth incidence, not the total number of people living with Down syndrome or its annual change.

Our responsibility does not depend on an assumed increase. Education and support should be considered across childhood, youth, adulthood and later life. A long-term approach recognises the different opportunities and needs of each stage.

Quality education: access, participation and learning

Inclusive education values active participation in learning and school life. Guidelines developed by NDSS and Down Syndrome Education International provide a framework extending from early support into later educational stages.

IBL’s perspective brings individual learning goals, accessible materials, appropriate teaching support and school-family communication together. Opportunities in literacy, communication, numeracy, arts and digital tools should not be restricted by a single assumption about ability. Progress should relate to the individual’s development and own goals.

A place at work and recognition for contribution

Meaningful work can provide income, relationships, responsibility and belonging. Clear tasks, appropriate job matching, necessary support and prepared colleagues matter in an inclusive workplace. People with different interests should not be channelled into only a few occupations.

IBL sees employment preparation as a process connecting skills development with workplace readiness. Fair pay, safe conditions and opportunities to progress are fundamental. A person’s worth does not depend on employment or productivity; expanding opportunities should always respect unconditional human dignity.

Independence strengthened by appropriate support

Independent living means different things to different people. Priorities may include using public transport, shopping, understanding a budget, managing a routine or choosing where to live. Goals should reflect the person’s wishes, abilities and support needs.

Down Syndrome International emphasises decision-making with appropriate support and understandable communication. Our approach similarly favours helping a person understand options and express preferences over routinely deciding on their behalf. Needing support does not remove a person’s voice.

Attention, continuity and support for families

Caring means listening, making time, communicating accessibly and maintaining relationships. Friendship, arts, sport and neighbourhood life matter alongside education and employment. Addressing adults as adults, respecting privacy and seeking consent when sharing images or stories belong in this approach.

Families also need access to information, shared experience and specialist support when appropriate. Social responsibility means developing solidarity that does not leave every caring responsibility with one relative. Individual educational and health needs should be assessed with relevant professionals.

Alongside individuals, together with civil society

IBL works in this field with İzmir Down Sendromu Derneği and Türkiye Down Sendromu Derneği. We value listening to people with Down syndrome and their families, understanding local needs and drawing on civil society’s experience. These human connections inform our approach to education, community participation and opportunities for independent living.

IBL’s social responsibility priorities

We develop our approach by listening to people with Down syndrome and their families and valuing civil society’s knowledge. Initiatives we consider should have clear objectives, responsibilities and sustainable resources.

  • Awareness of inclusive education and lifelong learning.
  • Employment preparation ideas suited to individual interests and skills.
  • Approaches that strengthen everyday skills and supported decision-making.
  • Knowledge sharing among families, educators, employers and civil society.
  • Direct participation, accessible communication and traceable community benefit in projects.

Shaping the future together

An inclusive society grows through tangible everyday opportunities: a preference carefully heard, an accessible lesson, a fair interview and a lasting friendship. IBL Finance embraces social responsibility that helps such opportunities develop.

Strong steps gain meaning when they lead towards a future everyone can participate in. We believe in shared responsibility for a future in which people with Down syndrome can learn, contribute, make choices and take their rightful place in community life.
